AI Roasted My Town—and Honestly? It Was More Useful Than a $40K Sentiment Report

Let’s talk about a lie in destination marketing: That sentiment needs big tools, big money.

We spend tens of thousands on tools to “listen” to our visitors. Surveys, reviews, dashboards, brand studies with beautiful pie charts and phrases like “opportunity gap” and “perception variance.”

But ask yourself this: When’s the last time anyone read one of those reports and actually did something different? Not a new slogan. Not a new photo shoot. Something fundamentally different.

Here’s a theory: You don’t need another polite PDF telling you your downtown is “emerging” and your branding is “warm and authentic.”

You need a roast. AI synthesizes information and perception; let's use that.

So I fed Chandler, AZ into AI and said: don’t hold back.

And what came out? Brutal. But useful.

*I live in Chandler and I absolutely adore it.

🔥The Roast:

Chandler, Arizona: where beige goes to retire.

The city motto might as well be “We have everything Phoenix has… but slower, pricier, and with 50% more HOA drama.”

You drive into Chandler and immediately get hit with the scent of burning pavement, Cinnabon, and generational wealth that still can’t figure out how to brand itself.

It’s the kind of place where every new development is called something like The Villas at Ocotillo But Not Really, and the biggest local controversy is whether Trader Joe’s ran out of cauliflower gnocchi.

Your downtown? Cute. In a “we tried to be Austin but forgot the soul” kind of way. It's giving… municipal cosplay. Like someone googled “what is walkability” and just slapped string lights on it.

You’ve got tech jobs, Teslas, and taquerias—but somehow no one’s having any fun. It’s like a theme park for people who peaked in their HOA Facebook group.

And don’t get me started on your attempt at nightlife. If you consider “live music” a guy named Chad covering Wagon Wheel in a converted wine bar next to a candle store, you might be Chandler.

It’s where tourism goes to play it safe, where brand campaigns are beige and bold moves die in committee.

In Chandler, “relax” doesn’t mean chill. It means settle.

Now here’s the strategy buried inside:

  1. Perception > Personality Chandler is clean, safe, and suburban, but perceived as flat, personality-wise. The roast shows what people feel about the brand: predictable, too polished, forgettable. That’s an emotional insight, not a KPI.

  2. Style over Substance Every destination can install Edison bulbs and call it a “vibe.” But the roast reveals where you’re styling your way around having a core identity. That’s fixable—but only if you admit it.

  3. Try-Hard Tourism Isn’t Authenticity If your campaign is trying to look cool, you’ve already lost. The roast tells you where your branding feels forced, not felt.

Bookmark This Strategy: Let AI roast your destination. Then take that first gut-punch and actually do something with it.

  1. Rewrite your brand truths.

  2. Compare sentiment to strategy.

  3. Ask: “Would we survive this roast six months from now?”

Then come back and try it again. See if the roast has changed. If it hasn’t, your strategy hasn’t either.

💬 Want to test this on your town? DM me. No pitch. Just curiosity.

I’ll show you how a brutal roast might be the first real insight your destination has had in years.

Orrrr...you could join us at DestiCon, let me and Helen (my AI) roast you live. ;-)
