Barbee v. Tourism

Common Gen Z-ish Terms in the Wild.

As a mom to both Gen Z and Gen Alpha, I live in a household where entire conversations sound like encrypted slang.

As a mom to both Gen Z and Gen Alpha, I live in a household where entire conversations sound like encrypted slang. So if you’ve ever smiled and nodded through a phrase like “ate with no crumbs,” this one’s for you. A little tourism glossary for the rest of us, because culture moves fast, and relevance is the real ROI.

1. Pressure Definition: Unreasonably good. So good, it's a problem. Tourism example: “That new Visit Albuquerque merch drop? Pressure.” Translation: They nailed it. Let’s steal it immediately.

2. Ate (and left no crumbs) Definition: Crushed it. Performed perfectly. A+ with extra credit. Tourism example: “Our summer spot campaign? We ate.” Careful, cringe if you say this out loud unless you are under 27 or Beyoncé.

3. Delulu Definition: Delusional, but with ✨vibes✨. Tourism example: “The mayor thinks the rebrand can be done in 6 days? So delulu.” (Also: my mood every time I say, “This’ll be a chill week.”)

4. Rizz Definition: Charisma, game, magnetism. Tourism example: “That travel writer has rizz—every brand is tripping over themselves to host her.” Note: Not to be confused with “rizzo,” which is Grease-core, not Gen Z.

5. Mid Definition: Meh. Basic. Average at best. Tourism example: “I know we paid $60K for that influencer reel, but it’s kinda mid.” Also used by teens to describe their own dinner. And personalities.

6. It’s giving [X] Definition: It reminds me of this thing. Often sarcastic. Tourism example: “That AI-generated content? It’s giving mall directory circa 2003.” Also acceptable: “It’s giving White Lotus meets city council drama.”

7. Slay Definition: Nailed it. Strong execution. Killer vibes. Tourism example: “Our Pride Month rollout? Total slay.” Warning: The line between slay and sleazy is very thin in brand posts.

8. No cap Definition: No lie. For real. I’m serious. Tourism example: “That data is gold, no cap.” I dare you to try this in a board retreat and watch someone panic.

Pro tip: Don’t try to use these in a press release unless you want the internet to drag you.

But knowing them? That’s strategy. Because how people talk matters...even if it’s absurd, chaotic, or delulu as hell. Culture is currency. And if you’re marketing destinations, you’d better know how the next generation is spending theirs.

Tagline of the day: Tourism may be old, but it doesn’t have to be mid. 🕶️

Stay weird. Stay in the loop. Stay destruptive.
