DMOs Are Basically Dating Their Data… and the Relationship Is Not Giving.

Let me hold your hand and hurt your feelings:

Your data is embarrassing you in public.

Let’s discuss.

Tourism loves to talk about being data-driven. But half the time, the “data” in question is about as reliable as a psychic at a county fair.

Here are the signs your relationship with your data might be… complicated:

🚩 Red Flag #1: “We know our visitor.”

Oh? Based on what...the hotel report, last year’s brochure distribution, and one guy who commented on Facebook?

Meanwhile STR guests (the part you are absolutely missing) are out here:

  • staying longer

  • spending differently

  • moving through your destination like witness protection

  • and leaving zero trace in your dashboards

Your data isn’t lying. It simply hasn’t met most of your visitors.

🚩 Red Flag #2: 95% of your website visitors are anonymous.

This isn’t mysterious. It’s not poetic. It’s not “they just want privacy.”

It’s your data saying:

“Don’t ask me where I was last night.”

And you’re answering:

“No worries! Want to build our strategy together?”

🚩 Red Flag #3: Hotel data is doing all the heavy lifting.

It’s the only friend you listen to. Even though it only knows 30% of the story.

It’s like asking your dentist for marriage advice. Helpful, maybe. Relevant? Not really.

STR guests — the ones actually driving modern economic impact — are completely off-book. Urban legends with rental agreements.

🚩 Red Flag #4: Your dashboards are gaslighting you.

“Everything is fine.” “Awareness is stable.” “Targeting is performing normally.”

Yes, well, so did the Titanic right before it became a coral habitat.

So here’s the part where we step back from the trees:

Destinations don’t have a marketing problem. They have a visibility problem.

You’re not underperforming. You’re under-informed.

Your data isn’t cheating on you, it simply doesn’t know what it doesn’t know.

That’s the Host Gap™. The space between the visitor you think you’re serving and the visitor who is actually showing up in the real world.

And until destinations fix that? Every “strategy retreat” is just a group of very smart people solving the wrong riddle with the wrong clues.

I’m Jenn Barbee, and I’ll give it to you straight: Your data isn’t wrong — it’s incomplete. And incomplete data builds incomplete strategy.
