The End of the Agency Savior: Time to Rethink Everything.

There's been a change-a-coming for the agency role for a hot minute. With the onslaught of SMEs, fractured marketing strategy, and a general lack of "reading the room," service agencies are in trouble.

Grab a cuppa; we're going to talk. It’s not easy to say this, but I think it’s time we all face a hard truth: the agency model we’ve relied on for decades is no longer working. The “agency savior” is dead. The days of Mad Men are long gone, and clinging to them is dragging us down. No one cares how many swinging...suits you pile in the room.

I say this as someone who believes deeply in the power of creativity and connection. I’ve built my career—and my agency—on the belief that good work has the ability to inspire, influence, and ignite change. But lately, I’ve found myself watching our industry lose its edge.

It’s not just me.

You see it too, don’t you?

The cracks are showing, and it’s not pretty.

We’ve Lost Our Why

Agencies used to be fearless, taking bold risks, championing ideas that made people feel something, and reshaping culture. Now, we’re just going through the motions. How often do we sit in meetings where the goal isn’t to make something exceptional, but simply to meet the brief and stay safe?

We’ve traded imagination for optimization, originality for efficiency. Everything feels templated, rushed, and sanitized. This is not why we started doing this work.

We’ve Let Data Run the Show

Data is an incredible tool, but we’ve let it take over. It’s no longer informing our decisions—it’s making them. We’ve handed over the reins to dashboards and algorithms, convincing ourselves that more clicks or higher impressions mean better outcomes.

But metrics can’t measure meaning. They don’t tell us if we’ve moved hearts or minds. We’re letting Data dictate creativity, and it’s killing our craft.

We’re Playing It Too Safe

Somewhere along the way, we became scared. Scared of pushing back. Scared of standing out. Scared of standing for something.

So we sand down the edges, water down the bold ideas, and focus on what’s easy to sell. We call it “meeting the client where they are,” but let’s be honest: we’re just avoiding the hard conversations.

When did we stop being the partners who push for greatness and become the vendors who just deliver what’s asked?

We’re Losing Relevance

Let’s face it—brands aren’t turning to agencies the way they used to. They’re building in-house teams or experimenting with influencers and creators who understand culture in ways we’ve failed to keep up with. Or worse, we play musical chairs with the account team tapped to manage the client relationship. But is there even a relationship if there's a revolving door?

Meanwhile, we’re still patting ourselves on the back for being “diverse” and “modern” without doing the work to actually represent the world we claim to influence. We preach authenticity but struggle to practice it.

It’s no wonder brands are questioning whether they even need us.

We Can Do Better

Here’s the thing: I don’t believe agencies are obsolete. Far from it. But if we’re going to survive—if we’re going to thrive—we need to change.

Let’s remember why agencies existed in the first place: to bring fresh perspectives, bold ideas, and expert execution. To take risks and lead, not follow.

That means:

  • Respecting Data, Not Worshiping It: Use it as a tool, not a crutch. Numbers don’t tell the whole story—human insight does.

  • Defending Creativity: Stop defaulting to what’s safe. Fight for the ideas that challenge, provoke, and resonate.

  • Rebuilding Trust: Be a partner, not a yes-man. Push back when it’s right, lead with integrity, and always prioritize what will actually drive impact.

  • Evolving Authentically: Diversity and inclusion aren’t checkboxes—they’re imperatives. Culture isn’t something to “tap into”; it’s something to understand and honor.

We have to hold ourselves accountable. This isn’t just about survival—it’s about relevance.

About doing the kind of work we can be proud of.

About showing brands—and the world—that agencies still matter.

So, What’s Next?

We can’t keep mourning the death of the old agency model. It’s time to embrace what’s next. To redefine what it means to be an agency in a world that’s more connected, complex, and demanding than ever before.

This is a call to action, not a eulogy. Creativity isn’t dead. Agencies aren’t obsolete. But the change has to start with us.

Let’s stop looking backward and start building something better.

With hope, urgency, and a little tough love,
