It’s conference season.

Which means thousands of tourism professionals are currently gathered in carpeted hotel ballrooms across the country talking about “the future of the industry.”

And if you judged tourism solely by what happens at conferences…

you would think we are absolutely crushing it.

At conferences:

  • Every campaign worked.

  • Every destination is thriving.

  • Every panel is about innovation.

  • Every video has drone shots and emotional music.

Tourism, apparently, is going great.

Meanwhile, back home:

  • The budget meeting is tense.

  • Someone on Facebook is mad about tourists again.

  • The mayor wants a viral vid.

  • The board wants more “ROI.”

  • And someone has emailed the DMO asking if tourism can pay for their festival.

But honestly, the best part of tourism conferences is the archetypes.

Every single event has the same cast of characters.

You will meet:

The Case Study Hero Their campaign generated 400 million impressions and healed the economy. No one asks follow-up questions.

The Panel Hijacker Four people were invited to speak. One person will speak.

The Networking Machine They somehow know everyone. They also somehow never sleep.

The Vendor Who “Just Wants 10 Minutes” You will give them 10 minutes. It will be 47 minutes.

The Person Who Is Definitely Not Hungover They are wearing sunglasses inside. Do not ask questions.

The Quiet Smart One in the Back Doesn’t say anything the entire session. Then asks one question that makes the panel panic.

And of course…

The Late-Night Truth Circle This happens around 9:30pm at whatever bar the group migrated to. That’s when the real conversations start.

About budgets. About politics. About the weird things happening in tourism right now.

Because the funny thing about tourism conferences is this:

The stage shows the highlight reel.

The hallway conversations tell the truth.

And when everyone flies home next week…

the real work starts again.

I'm Jenn Barbee. See you in the hallways.

Or July 24.
