The Tourism Strategy Move You Might Be Skipping.
Everyone loves the word strategy. It makes us feel "official", grown-up. We put it in slide decks. We put it in job titles. Some of us even …
Barbee v. Tourism
Taking a break from lecturing y’all today and just spilling the industry tea. No homework, no strategy worksheets, just vibes and headlines. 1. Money got shy.
Taking a break from lecturing y’all today and just spilling the industry tea. No homework, no strategy worksheets, just vibes and headlines.
1. Money got shy. Global travel and tourism deals are down 8% this year. Venture money is ghosting, private equity is slow dancing with “caution,” and Asia’s the only region seeing a little spark. Moral of the story: if you’re banking on investors to save your tourism dreams, maybe don’t.
2. Spain said “enough.” Overtourism protests are spilling through Barcelona, Mallorca, and the Canary Islands. Residents are tired of tourists snapping selfies in front of their homes and driving up rents. Portugal and Italy are feeling the same energy. (Turns out “authentic” can feel invasive real quick.)
3. Canada is feeling itself. Political tariffs + patriotism = a 75% spike in Canadians traveling… inside Canada. Instead of Miami, they’re choosing Banff and Yukon and even got a “Canada Strong” pass to sweeten the deal. (When did patriotism start doubling as a travel perk?)
4. U.S. travel glow-down. International visits to the U.S. are sliding, and it’s costing billions. NYC alone is bracing for a $4B hit and two million fewer international visitors this year. It’s not just about policy, it’s about perception, and perception isn’t playing nice.
5. Thailand cooled off. Inbound tourism is down 6.2% so far this year. Forecasts dropped by millions of expected visitors. Even the darlings of tourism have off-seasons, apparently.
6. Gen Z has a type—and it’s small-town. They’re “townsizing”—ditching big city chaos for retro-cute, Instagrammable small towns. Nostalgia + affordability + slower pace is the flex now. If your marketing screams “urban hustle,” Gen Z is already swiping left.
7. Fitness is trending. Wellness travel is booming: yoga retreats, marathon sightseeing, “holisti-days.” People want to come back from vacation healthier, not heavier (we’ll see how long that lasts).
Tourism this week is giving big character energy, but also kind of crying in the bathroom between scenes. Investors are nervous, locals are staging full-on breakups, Canada’s flexing like a dad in a “World’s Best Griller” apron, and Gen Z just wants a tiny-town cottagecore life with a latte. Even fitness is stealing vacation’s thunder (because apparently “rest” is too basic now).
Translation? Tourism is messy, dramatic, and slightly unhinged, but you wouldn’t trade it for anything because chaos is the job description. Pour another cup, because next week it’ll probably be weirder.
