You Can’t Catch Up on Sleep (or Trends)

I slept 10 hours last night. The kind of sleep you only get after something breaks, literally.

Our bed collapsed at 2AM.

Not in a "we still got it" way.

In a “did we just fall through a portal to another dimension?” kind of way.

Turns out the beautiful wood slats underneath had been weakening for a while. We didn’t notice until they gave out all at once.

So we rebuilt the bed. This time with an inserted metal frame. Stronger. Future-proof. But here’s the part where the universe laughs at me: that fix raised the whole bed four inches higher. Now I need a step stool just to climb in. (hello, short queens.👋)

That’s the metaphor.

What was holding us up before couldn’t support the weight anymore. And when we reinforced it? We didn’t just repair...we elevated. But it came with a new challenge: You can’t go higher without stepping up.

And when I finally climbed into that stronger, taller bed and got that long, overdue sleep? I still woke up exhausted. Because here’s the kicker:

“You can’t catch up on sleep. What you lose is already gone.”

That’s what a doctor once told me. And it applies to more than just sleep.

It applies to strategy. To momentum. To relevance.

And right now? Too many people are trying to “catch up” on trends the same way. Late. Reactive. Worn out. Thinking one good night of action will undo a year of indecision.

So if you’ve been telling yourself you’re “working on it,” here are 5 trends you can stop pretending you’re catching up on:

1. AI & Automation “We’re exploring use cases.” No, you’re waiting to see how much of your job it will replace. AI isn’t optional anymore; it’s oxygen. Pick one tool. Learn what it actually does. Use it. Or keep printing PDFs while the rest of the world moves on.

2. Influencer & Creator Strategy “We’re thinking about doing something with TikTok.” Since 2020. Meanwhile, creators built their own empires, audiences, and ecosystems. You’re not late — you’re just commitment-phobic. Either pay people with actual influence, or accept that your brand will never leave the group chat.

3. Inclusive Storytelling “We’re being cautious about representation.” No. You’re being cowardly. Travel isn’t neutral. And marketing never has been. If your content still looks like a brochure from 2008, people notice. And they go somewhere else.

4. Content That Doesn’t Suck “We’re revamping our blog strategy.” Cool, but you still publish “Top 5 Things To Do…” What year is it? People want personality. Perspective. Proof that a human wrote it. No one bookmarks generic. Be interesting or be quiet.

5. Leadership That Actually Leads “We’re investing in our people.” With what? Pizza parties and trauma? The new trend is vulnerability, boundaries, and accountability. If your team’s burned out, checked out, or quietly job-hunting— That’s not gossip. That’s feedback.

You don’t have to master all of it. But you do have to stop pretending broken foundations will hold you. Whether it’s your team, your marketing, or your own nervous system. If it’s snapping under pressure, it’s not built for the next phase.

Reinforce. Rebuild. Step up. Even if you need a damn step stool.

Because the next level? It’s taller. It’s louder. And it sure as hell isn’t handing out participation trophies.

If you’re still “thinking about it,” good luck down there.
