Lessons From a 1997 Chatroom: What Online Weirdos Always Knew About Emotional Marketing
It was 1997. I was in a Yahoo! chatroom - wearing platform sandals, drinking a Clearly Canadian, probably quoting Charmed...when I met a boy…

Let’s talk about loyalty. Not the dusty kind with punch cards or hashtags. Not “Welcome back!” in Comic Sans at the airport.
Let’s talk about loyalty.
Not the dusty kind with punch cards or hashtags. Not “Welcome back!” in Comic Sans at the airport.
I’m talking about real tourism loyalty—the kind that makes people remember your destination like an inside joke. Like a scar. Like a secret.
You want loyalty? Then you have to stop treating tourism like a transaction—and start treating it like a relationship.
Here’s the problem: Most destinations chase the first visit like it’s prom night. All glitter, big promises, expensive photos. But what happens after the trip? Crickets. Or worse—spammy newsletters that scream “Book again!” before the traveler even unpacks.
That’s not strategy. That’s desperation in a subject line.
Loyalty is earned in the moment. And right now? You’re leaving too many of those moments up to chance.
Newsflash: The actual visitor center is no longer a building. It’s the barista who tells you where to watch the sunset. It’s the Uber driver who warns you about tourist traps. It’s the Airbnb welcome note written in Comic Sans with a smiley face drawn on it. It’s the bar with locals who say, “You gotta try the smoked old fashioned.”
Those are the moments that spark loyalty.
Not your ad campaign. Not your mural. Not your geotag.
If you’re not activating those invisible visitor centers—you’re not in the loyalty business. You’re in the churn business.
Let’s break the myth: Loyalty doesn’t just happen to great destinations. It’s built. Systematically. Deliberately. With strategy, identity, and frictionless brand moments at every level.
Want return visitors? Start here:
1. Treat locals like they are your brand team. Train your frontline. Partner with your best bartenders. Elevate those who already influence the narrative. If your locals don’t believe in your destination, why should anyone else?
2. Embed moments of magic where people least expect them. Think custom Spotify playlists in STRs. Free stickers at the indie coffee shop. A visitor hotline that texts back with sass. These micro-moments scale. And they stick.
3. Shift from content to conversation. Most DMOs are still publishing like it’s 2015. You don’t need more posts. You need more pull. Create content that sparks a memory, fuels a share, or helps someone tell their own story. If your content feels like a commercial, loyalty won’t stick. But if it feels like a reflection? That’s forever.
If your entire loyalty strategy is a post-trip email, you’re already forgotten.
But if you embed surprise, delight, story, and humanity inside the destination experience itself? You’ll never have to beg for a return trip again.
Because people don’t come back for deals. They come back for the feeling of being seen.
Want to test if you’re doing it right?
Ask a visitor: “What’s the one moment you’ll tell your friends about?”
If they don’t have an answer? You don’t have loyalty. You have a leak.
Fix it.
