Nothing Says Romance Like Displacing a City
Venice didn’t ask to host Jeff Bezos’s wedding flex. But here we are, superyachts clogging the canals, paparazzi stalking the bridges, and V…
Barbee v. Tourism
Because it kind of is. When was the last time you really saw your town? Not drove through it. Not reviewed a campaign deck. Actually saw it. Chances are, it’s all started to blur. Same coffee shop.
Because it kind of is.
When was the last time you really saw your town? Not drove through it. Not reviewed a campaign deck. Actually saw it.
Chances are, it’s all started to blur. Same coffee shop. Same sidewalks. Same corners you don’t look twice at anymore. You’ve stopped noticing things, and honestly, who could blame you? You’ve got a million tabs open in your brain, and none of them say “make time for wonder.”
But it’s still there.
In the street musician playing for no one in particular. In the smell of tortillas from the back alley kitchen you forgot existed. In the kid drawing chalk hearts on the sidewalk while their mom scrolls her phone. In the mural you helped install but never actually looked at since the ribbon cutting.
So here’s your invitation: Be a visitor in your own town this weekend. But not the “do the same touristy stuff and call it perspective” kind.
Walk in someone else’s shoes. Someone completely different from you. Let them lead.
Here’s your weekend wander list to shake you out of your same-old:
WANDER LIST Try one. Try all. Just don’t stay in your bubble.
Go where the teens hang out. The mall. The roller rink. The soda shop that’s secretly a front for TikTok content.
Pick a neighborhood you’ve never had a reason to visit. Then give yourself one.
Eat something you didn’t grow up with. Ask the staff what they love and order that.
Sit somewhere without your phone for ten full minutes. Just watch.
Visit a cultural space that doesn’t reflect your own background, and don’t pretend to know anything.
Ask a frontline worker what visitors always miss. Then go do that.
Buy a postcard. Fill it out. Mail it to yourself. Let it remind you this place still has magic.
You don’t need a new job or a new city or a plane ticket to feel something. You just need a new lens.
Shake it up. Look again. There’s still so much to fall in love with.
You just got used to walking past it.
And if your boss balks about dipping early, tell him you'll write about it...or whatever.
