Rules for Rulebreakers (but make it Tourism)

Barbee v. Tourism
Here’s a free strategy audit you can do in under 10 seconds: Look at your last post, email, ad, website, or video… and ask: “What do I want them to do next?” Not what you want them to see.
Here’s a free strategy audit you can do in under 10 seconds: Look at your last post, email, ad, website, or video… and ask: “What do I want them to do next?” Not what you want them to see. Not what you want them to feel. What do you want them to do?
If your answer is “engage” or “build awareness,” that’s not a strategy — that’s a mood.
And if you don’t know? Neither do they.
You end up with cute but confusing content.
You throw money behind a gorgeous campaign that gets lots of likes… but zero conversions.
Your team gets overwhelmed, your partners get antsy, and your boss starts micromanaging again.
Let’s break it down like a tourist on their third mimosa:
Want them to book? Then the CTA better not be “learn more” ... it better be “start planning your weekend escape now.”
Want them to share it? Make it built for bragging. Say the quiet part out loud: “Tag the friend who would never survive this hike.”
Want them to sign up, click, buy, vote, apply, or stop scrolling? Then say it. Boldly. And only ask them to do one thing at a time. (No more four-link captions or PDF downloads from 2008, I beg you.)
Most tourism marketing doesn’t fail because the idea was bad. It fails because nobody knew what to do next.
And in an industry where attention spans are shorter than your average hotel towel inventory, clarity isn’t a luxury, it’s survival.
If your CTA is vague, your results will be too.
If your strategy feels soft, sharpen the action step.
And if you can’t explain what the next move is — sit your ass back down and fix it before you post.
Let’s say it together: “Awareness” is not an outcome. It’s a starting point.
What happens next — that’s where strategy lives.
