Why "Owned" Media is a F*cking Lie

For years, marketers have preached the gospel of owned media—your website, your email list, your content, your audience. The idea? Build your own channels, and you’ll never be at the mercy of algorithms or ad spend.

Cute.

Except here’s the truth: You don’t own sh*t.

☕ 1️⃣ The Myth of Ownership in Digital Marketing

The promise of owned media was control—that if you build your own channels, you won’t be reliant on third-party platforms. But reality doesn’t work that way.

🚨 Websites? Google decides if you’re visible.

🚨 Email lists? Gmail and Outlook filter your messages before people even see them.

🚨 Social followers? You don’t own them—Meta and TikTok do.

🚨 SEO? One algorithm shift and your traffic disappears overnight.

If your business depends on an internet connection, a search engine, or an email provider, congratulations—you’re playing by someone else’s rules.

📉 2️⃣ "Content is King" Could Actually Be Busy Work

Somewhere along the way, the idea of owning media turned into churning out endless content. Brands were told, “Just post more! Publish more! Make more videos! The algorithm loves content!”

📌 Except the truth is: Content isn’t king. Loyalty is.

If your content creators are stuck producing just for the sake of staying active, you’ve turned marketing into busy work.

🔹 Posting daily doesn’t mean people care. If your content isn’t building long-term relationships, it’s just noise.

🔹 “More” doesn’t mean “better.” You don’t need more content, you need content that makes people want to come back.

🔹 Virality is fleeting. Loyalty is forever. Stop chasing temporary engagement spikes and start building real connection.

The real game? Redirect your content teams to focus on building loyalty, not just content volume.

🔥 3️⃣ So What Actually Works?

**Instead of trying to “own” media, focus on owning attention.

✅ Brand Loyalty > Platform Dependency—People should follow you, not just your platform. If your audience only engages when you show up in their feed, you don’t have an audience—you have borrowed eyeballs.

✅ Multi-Channel Presence—A website, a newsletter, social content, and yes, even real-world brand presence. If one platform goes down, your audience shouldn’t disappear with it.

✅ Relationships Over Reach—Stop chasing numbers. A thousand die-hard supporters will do more for you than 100,000 passive followers.

⚡ The Bottom Line: You Don’t Own Media—But You Can Own Influence

The platforms own the data, the algorithms, and the traffic. But they don’t own how people feel about your brand.

The brands that thrive in the next decade won’t be the ones obsessing over platforms. They’ll be the ones obsessing over connection.

💬 So, do you really own your media—or are you just renting space? Let’s discuss.
